What Is Personal Brand Photography?

Personal branding photography (also known as brand photography and lifestyle photography) are thoughtfully photographed photos that showcase your brand vision and lifestyle in a way that connects with the audience you’re trying to reach and sell to.

It’s important to remember that you never want to come off too salesy. Photography and branding is a great way to bridge this gap. When implemented correctly by a professional branding photographer, they will be able to capture a narrative of a lifestyle that your specific customer is wanting for themselves.

Business branding photography is now the essential to any business owners who want to build solid relationships and make new connections with millennials and savvy customers.

Is Social Media Branding Photography Different?

Yes and no. I’d like to point out that both personal brand photography, lifestyle photography and social media photography tend to be used interchangeably. In short, social media photos are just that; professional photos for your social media profiles.

When you think about personal branding and social media photos, you don’t necessarily want to think of traditional headshots. When you take a professional portrait like this, the photographer will typically have you stand still and hold (or “pose”) in an unnatural way. This leads to capturing good business headshots that are polished, yes. However since they are typically so stiff, they aren’t recommend for social media or marketing material where you want to make an emotional connection.

Your branding photoshoot should be human branding pictures that honor the humanness in all of us and capture candid moments of interactions and reactions. This is true authentic marketing and applies to any business industry whether a small business owner, mechanic, personal trainer or designer.

Small Business Branding Ideas: What Is Your Brand Aesthetic?

We understand that it may be difficult for clients to determine what their personal brand is. Likewise it’s important to remember that your brand is much, much more than a logo.

That is why we have come up with a branding questionnaire that branding clients can reference when trying to figure out what their brand photography should be about.

  1. Who is your perfect client and what issue will your product or service help them solve?
  2. Which similar brands or services out there do you aspire to be like; or be better than?
  3. As you think about locations and outfit ideas, what locations best align with your brands messaging and what outfits fit into that story?
  4. Do you have certain color palettes or a mood board that encompass your personal brands image? Pinterest is great to put together a mood board with branding photos.
  5. List 1-3 reasons how you stand out from the competition.
  6. What are your 1-3 brand words? These should be how you want customers to feel.

As a personal branding photographer, it is important that you have these questions answered as they will lead you to a CLEAR message in your branding photo. Your personal branding photography should be concise and instantly tell clients what you’re about.

Social Media & Branding Photography Tips

As you search for “branding photographers near me”, it may prove difficult to decide who you should hire for your branding photography. The best way to make this decision is to clearly see branding photos in your branding portfolio that you connect with. Remember that photographers are artists.

So you want to see personal branding photos you connect with in terms of lighting, engagement, cropping etc as this is how yours will more than likely turn out.

  1. Be Engaging – Your social media photos should be engaging. They should showcase something interesting and unique about you or your brand. A traditional headshot may be neat to look at, but what is interesting about that?
  2. Keep It Fresh – By this we mean that you should update your social media photos regularly. Don’t stick with using the same photos from one session for an entire year. Ideally, update your photos every quarter. Think of every season as an opportunity to capture creative social media photos.
  3. Experiment With Angles – When working with a brand photographer, let them experiment shooting you or your products from an interesting angle. You may have not originally planned it that way, but this could make some engaging content. Which goes back to point one.
  4. Use Light Creatively – Not everything has to be lit evenly. By this, we don’t mean shoot photos in the dark. But sometimes the most engaging photos for social media are the ones that play with shadow and deep contrast.
  5. Negative Space Can Work – Not every photo has to feature you close up. Sometimes you want to let the photo (and framing) breathe a bit. By this we mean to leave some empty space on the top, bottom or sides of the photos. This can actually increase the attention of whatever it is you are shooting. Since the eyes will be more focused on that object.
  6. Play With Colors – Colors bring out different emotions. So make sure to play with the use of colors in your social media and brand photos. Just remember that some colors may work better than other depending on what type of message you want to send out.

The Best Social Media To Share Photos

What is the best social media to share photos? By far it will have to be instagram.

To get the most awesome pictures to put on instagram follow these rules. The optimal sizes for instagram photos is 1080 pixels wide by 566 pixels to 1350 pixels wide (depending on the format – vertical or horizontal).

For the most wow out of your instagram photos, we recommend sticking with vertical images! They take up the most of the instagram page and show the most detail. The correct sizes for this would be 1080 pixels wide, and up to 1350 pixels tall.
